on tour

In the year ahead, Rembrandt van Rijn's painting The Standard-bearer (1636) will be making a tour of the twelve Dutch provinces. Because of Rembrandt's close ties with Friesland, especially when he was a young man, the tour will begin in the Fries Museum! The portrait will be exhibited in Leeuwarden from 30 April to 29 May.

The intimate presentation will include works by colleagues such as Lambert Jacobsz. and Govert Flinck. Flinck, who was later apprenticed to Rembrandt, painted a portrait of 24-year-old Saskia Uylenburgh. Two years earlier, Rembrandt had married Saskia in Sint Annaparochie in Friesland. Also on display is a print from 1750, which engraver Pieter Louw made after Rembrandt's Standard-bearer, before the painting disappeared abroad for centuries.

tour
After the Fries Museum, The Standard-bearer will travel to the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. Other participating museums are the Stedelijk Museum in Alkmaar, Drents Museum in Assen, Kunstlinie in Almere, Het Noord-Brabants Museum in 's-Hertogenbosch, Mauritshuis in The Hague, Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede, Museum Arnhem in Arnhem, Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg, Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht, and the Groninger Museum in Groningen. After the tour, the painting will be permanently displayed in the Gallery of Honour of the Rijksmuseum. See the entire tour programme at www.vaandeldragerontour.nl

the standard-bearer
The Standard-bearer (1636) was purchased by the Dutch state at the end of January 2022 with support from the Rembrandt Association and the Rijksmuseum Fund. The tour of the Netherlands is made possible by the Rijksmuseum, the Rembrandt Association and the Vriendenloterij. A website will also be launched with all the information about The Standard-bearer tour. The Rijksmuseum is producing special educational packages for primary and secondary schools, and vocational schools. These teaching materials will be made available free of charge and will align with existing learning objectives in various curricula. A book will be published in collaboration with the Rembrandt Association on the acquisition and the importance of the painting for the Dutch collection.

This collaboration is made possible by the Rijksmuseum, the Rembrandt Association and the VriendenLoterij.

The Fries Museum is partly funded by the Province of Friesland, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Municipality of Leeuwarden, the VriendenLoterij and the Abe Bonnema Foundation.
