redbad, king of the frisians: new perspectives on kingship in early medieval frisia and the development of a coastal identity

In February 2027, Redbad, King of the Frisians: New Perspectives on Kingship in Early Medieval Frisia and the Development of a Coastal Identity will be published. This is the first comprehensive volume devoted entirely to Redbad, King of the Frisians, and to society in early medieval Frisia (c. AD 400–800). Under the leadership of Dr Han Nijdam (Fryske Akademy), more than thirty international scholars from the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Norway, and Iceland have collaborated on a multidisciplinary study of politics, religion, economy, and material culture.

About the book

This volume explores Redbad, early medieval Frisian kingship, and the formation of a Frisian identity in the North Sea coastal region between approximately AD 400 and 800. The book offers a unique integrated perspective on both ruler and society by bringing together studies of political structures, sacral kingship, law, trade, seafaring, weaponry, pottery, textiles, clothing, settlements, religion, and burial practices. As such, it constitutes the first fully multidisciplinary overview of Redbad and his era, combining scholarly depth with accessibility.

Scholarly Significance

Redbad, King of the Frisians brings together contributions from more than thirty specialists representing a wide range of disciplines and institutions, including the Fryske Akademy, Fries Museum, University of Groningen, Ostfriesische Landschaft, and the Niedersächsisches Institut für historische Küstenforschung. Through a combination of archaeological, historical, legal, material-cultural, and religious approaches, the volume provides a comprehensive overview of a region and period that have previously been studied only in a fragmentary manner. The book places Redbad’s political authority and sacral kingship within the broader social, economic, and cultural networks of the North Sea world. At the same time, it offers insights into everyday life, from trade and seafaring to pottery, textiles, and burial rituals, demonstrating how Frisian identity developed during this formative period.
