open call VHDG x fries museum

artists museum night at fries museum

No fewer than 109 submissions were received in response to the Open Call from Art Initiative VHDG and the Fries Museum. The Open Call challenged artists to respond to the theme 'a garden against time'. The jury selected the works of Hannah van der Heide (2000, Nes), Hannes Schievink (2001, Dokkum), and Marcella de Wolff (1990, Arnhem), each of whom brings the theme to life with their unique style and vision.

These artists will present their work during Museum Night FRL on Saturday, 28th September in a distinctive manifestation at surprising locations within the museum.

hannes schievink

During Museum Night, Hannes Schievink will exhibit his work "Master & Mankelikens". This piece combines his previous creations "De Oprechtheidsriten" and "REPIKLEPSIS" into a large immersive artwork. The installation consists of three spatial objects: a papier-mâché well with video projection, a lectern with drawings, and an interactive card table. Visitors are guided by the character De Doper to explore their emotional landscape using the cards, creating a theatrical and introspective experience.

Hannes Schievink (2001, Dokkum) is an illustrator, artist, and graphic designer. He obtained his bachelor's degree in Illustration Design at ArtEZ Zwolle and has since been developing his practice around spirituality and contemporary Western society. Born in Dokkum and raised in Ferwert and Ureterp, his work is strongly influenced by Friesland and the Frisian community. He often uses drawings, installations, and performances to express his ideas. Schievink integrates the Frisian language into his international artistic practice and has exhibited multiple times in Leeuwarden as part of the TWEESPRAAK project.

hannah van der heide

Hannah van der Heide will present "Nachtflinter" during Museum Night, an all-encompassing experience consisting of an installation, publication, and performance. The installation includes a canopy bed with draped fabric, ceramic sculptures, and bean bags, while the publication "Kiss the swan on its beak" takes visitors to a dream world. The performance features intuitive live synthesizer music, creating a relaxing atmosphere.

Hannah van der Heide (born 2000, Nes) is an artist and illustrator, graduated from ArtEZ University of the Arts Zwolle. Her work includes installations, drawings, zines, performances, and sculptures, inspired by nature and intuition. She has exhibited in places such as Leeuwarden, Amsterdam, and Leipzig, and frequently collaborates with Bruin Parry.

marcella de wolff

Marcella de Wolff will present an adapted version of her sculptural installation "Recipient" during Museum Night. This installation, comprising both man-made and natural materials such as sunshade frames, kombucha organisms, and styrofoam cultivation trays, specifically responds to the space of the mezzanine between the second and third floors. The work raises provocative questions about the relationship between relaxation and recreation, ecological decay, and industrial decline.

Marcella de Wolff (1990, Arnhem) is a visual artist, partly raised in Friesland. She studied Liberal Arts and Sciences at Leiden University College, Fine Art at ArtEZ in Arnhem, and completed a residency at De Ateliers. Her installations and sculptures explore the dynamic and inexhaustible potential of everyday and found objects, focusing on the interaction between natural and human-made processes and phenomena.

The open call is made possible by the Alma-Tadema Circle of the Fries Museum.
