Louwrien Wijers (Aalten, 1941) developed her artistry in dialogue with influential thinkers and creators such as Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, the Dalai Lama and artists from the Fluxus movement. The film is set in Friesland, where Louwrien lives and works, and is held in a contemplative pace, to serve the flourishing language and concepts of the artist. The post-screening discussion will focus on the film's creative process, the theme of compassion and the contemporary significance of Wijers' work.

about the filmmakers

From Competition to Compassion was created by artists Petrine Vinje and Carsten Aniksdal, both based in Oslo. Their collaborative film work focuses on space, materiality and experience. Vinje combines her background in visual arts, research and installations with a strong interest in perception and meaning-making, while Aniksdal works with photography, film and sound to explore landscapes and places in time. Based on their shared belief that art can create space for reflection, they develop films with a tranquil, sensory character.

The film is produced by O Publications, a creative production space dedicated to capturing profound human experiences through film, artist-books and music. Click here for more information about O Publications.
