art talk: petrit halilaj

This Art Talk focuses on the work of Petrit Halilaj (Kostërrc, 1986). The Kosovar artist will travel to the Fries Museum especially for this live event on Saturday afternoon, 21 January 2023.

Get to know the themes in Halilaj’s work with an introduction by curator Judith Spijksma, various guests from the contemporary art field, and (musical) interludes. The programme revolves around the value and meaning of cultural heritage and community.
The programme includes a talk with Charles Esche (director Van Abbemuseum) and Petrit Halilaj. There will be interludes with performances by Michelle Samba and Selma Selman. Refreshments will be served afterwards and there will be plenty of time for reflection.
The Art Talk will be presented in English.

The guests during the Art Talk will include Charles Esche, director of the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven and professor of contemporary art and curating at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts in London. Nadine Ridder moderates the afternoon and Michele Samba provides a musical performance in the form of a percussion composition between the program components.

Petrit Halilaj’s work regularly harks back to Kosovo’s recent history and the political and cultural tensions in the region. Intimate, personal experiences are at the core, but his work simultaneously touches on broader, societal issues such as freedom and identity, the (re)appreciation of stories and recognition of LGBTQI+ rights. A major exhibition of the Halilaj’s work is now on display at the Fries Museum.
