10 years new fries museum

celebration

On September 13, 2013, Queen Máxima opened the new building in the heart of Leeuwarden! With this, the Fries Museum became the first completely newly built Dutch museum of the 21st century. As part of this 10th anniversary we are celebrating! Saturday 16 September and Sunday 17 September we are open for free to everyone (be sure to reserve your ticket in advance!). We are treating, there are unique speed tours, fun workshops for the whole family and you will discover our newest exhibitions. For example, have you seen Seeds of Memory, Christoffel & Kate Bisschop: Longing for the Past or Fryslân from above yet?

saturday 16 september

Family Workshop: Flowerpower
Make your own flower brooch! Be inspired by Christoffel Bisschop’s work The Leekstertak and get to work on your own brooch. In this family workshop you will work with wood, crepe paper and a pin to create the most beautiful flower brooch. After the workshop, you will walk out of the museum with your creation on your clothes.
Time: 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

ArtTalk Marathon
For years the museum has been making short video documentaries of contemporary artists to accompany temporary exhibitions. Enjoy non-stop delightful, short, intimate portraits of diverse artists in the Cinema Hall. Like of the eccentric O.C. Hooymeijer, photographer Dolf Kessler, artist Neo Matloga, the textile artist Afra Eisma who is now breaking through internationally and more.

But we will also show other films: from the theatrical performance by Simomo The Private Dancer in the halls of underwater exhibition Other.Worldly (2019) to the mini-documentary of a large-scale craft project with students, Frisian artisans and Éric Van Hove's studio in Marrakesh and a film in which the children's directorate interviews various staff members.
Time: 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Hindeloopen nails
Get your nails painted at the Roosje Hindeloopen nail studio. Inspired by the paintings of Roosje Hindeloopen, nail studio Happy Toko from Utrecht effortlessly puts a folklore manicure on your nails.
Time: 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Proust's Fragrances Carousel
Embark on an exploration of your own memories. In Proust's Fragrances Carousel, perfumer and scent artist Frank Bloem takes you on a journey through nostalgic feelings using scents. From behind his scent bar, Frank lets you smell scents that can cause the Proustian effect. Marcel Proust is the inventor of the effect that scent can suddenly transport you to a memory, as if you were sitting on your grandmother's sofa again. When the Frank manages to trigger the effect, you will be given a card with the scent in question, to recall the scent memory from time to time during your visit to the exhibition.
Time: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
