tongerfleagen

See this enormous bull bellowing at an approaching thunder storm, its heavy clouds building up in the sky, the first raindrops already beginning to fall. This painting by Simon Kamminga is aptly entitled Tongerfleagen which translates as ‘gusts of thunder’.

The painting technique with its countless dots and dashes is known as pointillism, which is more commonly associated with urban scenes, such as a park with elegantly parading ladies, and certainly not with a bellowing bull.

With this painting Kamminga won the incentive prize in a competition for young artists: an amount of 250 Dutch guilders, which he spent on a new heating stove.
