The collection of works by French Impressionists from Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam is coming to Leeuwarden next year. The Boijmans Van Beuningen and the Fries Museum are joining forces to present a major exhibition on the influence of French light on 19th-century painting, with landscapes by French masters such as Monet and Cézanne, but also Dutch artists such as Maris and Weissenbruch. The exhibition À la campagne! French Light from Maris to Monet will run from 19 February to 17 July 2022 and is part of the Frisian Triennial Arcadia.

This spring, the Fries Museum will be organising an exhibition on 19th-century French landscape painters and the Dutch artists who were influenced by them. This collection of masterpieces will be displayed in Leeuwarden while the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is being renovated. The exhibition shows how light played an important role in art: sunrays sparkle on water and fall through the leaves, and the wind dances on the canvas. The paintings and drawings by Cézanne, Monet, Pissarro, Gauguin, Maris, Van Gogh, Sisley, Boudin and Weissenbruch, among others, show the development of this ‘French view’, from the Barbizon school to (post-)Impressionism. The exhibition À la campagne! The French Light from Maris to Monet is part of Arcadia, an arts and community triennale in Friesland that centres on the themes of society, landscape and heritage for 100 days with an extensive cultural programme.

The Fries Museum is co-financed by the the Province of Fryslân, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Municipality of Leeuwarden, the BankGiro Loterij and the Ir. Abe Bonnema Foundation.
