Owing to its abundance of water, Friesland has been a popular holiday destination for over a century.
Around 1900 , due to industrial developments more and more of the hand work that had always been done by people was taken over by machines. As a result, people got more leisure time, which gave a strong impetus to the development of tourism. If we are to believe these postcards, the best place to go was the city of Hindeloopen.

At the time, the bathing pavilion there was a modern building, which opened its doors to the public in 1914, after which bathers and holiday makers came pouring in. The resort had something for everybody: children could splash about in the Zuider Zee, and the pavilion offered catering and dancing facilities.
