Isn’t it an idyllic picture, this milk cart on its way to the dairy factory in the morning – or evening sun? Ydema had witnessed himself how dairy processing gradually moved from the farms to factories, between 1880 and 1920.

The first dairy factory opened its doors in the village of Veenwouden, in 1879. In the following years more factories popped up like mushrooms. The big buildings with their tall chimneys formed conspicuous elements in the flat countryside.
