grandfather clock, tjeerd radsma
This is a typically Frisian ‘grandfather’ or longcase clock. This specimen is a rather luxury version, with its double hood, paint-decorated dial and the three figures on top representing Atlas carrying the world on his shoulders, flanked by two trumpet-blowing angels.
Grandfather clock, Tjeerd Radsma, 1810
After the agricultural crisis of the 19th century, many Frisian families emigrated to the USA, hoping to find a better future there. Often they took a few cherished family items along on their voyage as reminders of home, such as the old grandfather clock, the birth record spoons and the family Bible.
