This is a painting of one of the Frisian lakes. They are the result of the 18th-century peat digging operations , in which the soil was dug out to depths far below ground water level, after which the holes slowly filled with ground water, thereby swallowing entire villages.

In some lakes there is a special buoy to mark the spot where the village church once stood.
