To celebrate the birth of a child, called a poppe in Frisian, it was customary to pass this bowl around for all visitors to take a so-called poppeslokje: a spoonful of brandied raisins. The precious bowl was also used on other festive occasions, such as weddings.

That this specimen is of Frisian origin may be concluded from its horizontal ears – the ears on the bowls used in the province of Groningen were mounted vertically.
