international education programme on redbad launched

On Monday, 2 February, around 25 teachers came together for the launch of the education programme centred on the early medieval Frisian king Redbad. The meeting was organised by Learning Hub Friesland and marks the start of a series of international inspiration days.

At the heart of the programme was the question of how the story of Redbad (ca. 670–719) and his time can gain relevance in today’s education. With a roleplaying game workshop by the Mythemakers foundation, an interactive lecture by Han Nijdam (Fryske Akademy), and a visit to the terp of Hegebeintum, history was linked to contemporary themes such as citizenship and identity.

The education programme is part of the international project Redbad, in which nine organisations from the Netherlands and Germany collaborate. Learning Hub Friesland is responsible for connecting the international education programme to the wider project. Over the coming months, about 60 teachers from secondary and vocational education will take part in one or more inspiration days, representing a range of disciplines including Dutch, German, history, Frisian, citizenship, and art.

Alongside schools and museums, partners include the University of Groningen, the Mythemakers foundation, and the Fryske Akademy. The Fries Museum is the project’s initiator and lead partner. In addition to the education programme, a historical roleplaying game is being developed, along with an academic publication and a popular book. The academic research will also form the basis for a major exhibition on Redbad, opening on 5 September 2026 at the Fries Museum and later travelling to Emden (Germany).

Project REDBAD is carried out within the framework of the Interreg VI Germany–Netherlands programme, co-funded by the European Union, the Lower Saxony Ministry for Federal and European Affairs and Regional Development, the Province of Fryslân, and the Province of Groningen.
